Who we are

THE FARM.

In 1950, due to the interest shown by the local Medical Officer of the period, Josto Miglior, a figure who was to become legendary in Sardinia, and with the help of other far-sighted inhabitants of Jerzu, the Jerzu Coop Winery was set up. The forty-five partners, who held the best and most fertile vineyards of the Jerzu area, grew and processed Cannonau grapes, producing the wine of the same name, with its characteristic flavour and aroma, full-bodied and of intense colour. A symbol of the dedication to hard work of the folk of Jerzu, the Winery “Antichi Poderi di Jerzu” marks the success of the town’s long process of economic development and pays homage to the vision of a handful of pioneering local wine-growers.

THE TRADITION.

The roots of Antichi Poderi di Jerzu go back deep into the past. The first documents referring to wine-making in the village date back to the 12th century. The arrival of the Spanish in Sardinia boosted production and from that period on the whole community participated in the wine business, strengthening its leading role in the territory.

This flourishing activity led numerous families to move to the main towns in the region, where they opened their own wine shops; this period is known as the “Era of the Ox Carts”, from the carts that bore the wine from Jerzu to the new markets.

THE TERRITORY.

The Winery is sited in Jerzu itself, a pleasant small town situated some 500 m a.s.l. along the eastern coast in the heart of Ogliastra, one of the most attractive areas in Sardinia, with its rolling green hills, stretches of fine white sand, hidden bays set against an unspoilt natural background, valleys and mountains with impressive limestone spurs, the ‘tacchi’, and woods of centuries’ old trees framing the Nuraghic towers, Tombs of the Giants and ‘Domus de Janas’, megalithic monuments witness to a millennial civilization.

The mountains offer a lush natural backdrop of Mediterranean vegetation and wildlife.
